The Oakland Press reports today that Michigan is the only state that lost population in the most recent census. Even though I wasn’t here in the 1970s, I’ve heard more than a few people dredging up the comment, “Will the last one out please turn out the lights.”
The significant population shift means that Michigan will actually LOSE a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. That’s big news. It’s much bigger than the news a couple of weeks ago, that the Michigan legislature had approved funding to continue Michigan’s “Pure Michigan” tourism campaign. Apparently, tourism is all this state has left.
Several weeks ago, I commented to my husband that it would be fun to make spoofs of the Pure Michigan ads but, as you can plainly see on YouTube, that gap has been filled.
Even the university newspapers are covering the various breakdowns across the state:
Misspelled headlines. Now that’s Pure Michigan.
