Random-hyphen-syndrome

We took a road trip this weekend to visit our collegian in her new environment. I was hoping to see some fall color on the way, but it’s probably still early and my expectations are high.

We decided to bring the puppy along for the ride, since she just turned one and was no doubt missing her favorite member of the household. We didn’t consider that she wouldn’t be allowed in any of the buildings, including the dorm.

To stay out of trouble, we stayed outside. The weather was chillier than I expected and the cloud cover was thick, so there was no chance for any sun to get through and warm us up. We ate our lunch quickly and then headed to a nearby park to give us all a chance to stretch our legs. We found this great sign:

I can only scratch my head in wonder at why the extraneous hyphen was needed. Was “makereservations” in the original copy and, since it wouldn’t fit on the line, did the signmaker see fit to hyphenate it? Unlikely, but it’s fun to ruminate on such things. For now, we will diagnose this sign with RHS (random-hyphen-syndrome) and will be working feverishly on a cure.

We are pleased to say we found our college girl to be quite comfortable in her new home and, even though we miss her, know that she has the opportunity to do great things while she is there!
